 In 2001, exactly 100 years after Eugene Hollander performed the first face lift, I had a great conversation with a patient that came to see me about a face lift. The patient was in her 50’s and was concerned about the signs of aging. She said that she always looked tired and older than she felt. As I listened to her concerns, I truly believed that it would be an injustice to recommend a traditional face lift. I did not want to put her through it. I needed to do something different and better for her.
I believed that I could address all of her concerns by doing something innovative. I would make a smaller incision hidden in the natural crease of her ear and through that incision I would be able to provide her with the results that she was hopeful for. I would not have to put her to sleep with general anesthesia or IV sedation…that meant that it would be safer. She was relieved and excited!
Her result was amazing! After the procedure, she looked years younger, refreshed, and natural. I was able to obtain a result consistent with that of a traditional procedure. However, unlike a traditional procedure, she was able to resume her normal activities quickly. With her renewed confidence, she was ready to take on new challenges in her personal and professional life. She was extremely happy, and her new look changed her life!
After seeing what I could do with this procedure, I was even more upset thinking about woman going under dangerous anesthesia, having these massive surgeries with sometimes unnatural, pulled results. These people were recovering for weeks, sometimes months.
There was a huge un-served group of people between 45 and 65. They are too young to undergo a major traditional procedure; but need more than Botox® and skin treatments could provide. But, these people wanted to look as young as they felt! Besides the anesthesia, large incisions and trauma, who has the time to take weeks, sometimes months, to recover from a $10,000 traditional procedure? “Why would anyone ever want to put themselves through that?” I thought.
